“Did you see them?” Richard asked, looking between Emilio and Jack when they returned.

“No, we didn’t, they were concealed in the forest, and must have followed us from the city,” Emilio said, regarding Richard with a hard stare.

“The hunt is in two days, I will go on my own. Jack, you can stop here until we leave Padua,” Richard said.

Jack folded his arms solidly across his chest. “I’m not hiding in a bloody church.”

“It’s not safe,” Richard replied.

“I’m hardly likely to get attacked at the hunt am I? There will be too many people there,” Jack said.

“Jack, they were using a bow, they don’t have to be among the crowd to attack you, you fool,” Richard said exasperated.

Jack leaned towards him. “I’m not the fool who got me in to this, am I?”

“I’ll be there, and so will my men. In my view, if there is someone trying to stop you they are more likely to be putting their efforts into protecting Courtenay while he is at the hunt,” Emilio reasoned.

“Exactly,” Jack chimed in.

“Oh, very well!” Richard said wearily, realising he was not going to persuade his brother not to attend, and that Emilio was going to be of little help.
